Eczema, sometimes called Dermatitis, is a group of conditions that causes skin to become itchy, red, and inflamed. Eczema is common and affects people of all ages. The severity of eczema varies from person to person and can occur on just about any part of the body. It is most often noticed on the neck, inner elbows, or behind the knees. In mild forms of the condition, the skin is dry, hot and itchy. In more severe forms the skin can become broken, raw and bleeding.
Eczema is not a contagious condition. The cause of eczema is still unknown, however, researchers have found that people develop eczema from a combination of genes and environmental triggers. When an allergen or irritant is triggered in the immune system, skin cells do not function properly causing eczema to flare up.
Unfortunately, Eczema is not curable. However, there are treatments depending on the age of the patient and the severity of the condition. At Island Dermatology, we are sensitive to each eczema condition and will find the right treatment plan for you.
